Monthly Baby Photos: What to Shoot Each Month (Month-by-Month)

A practical month-by-month guide to your baby's first-year photos — one prop for scale, window light, and what to shoot from newborn to first steps. Missed a month? Any nice photo works. Twelve of them become a printable board.

The short version: take one photo of your baby each month, in roughly the same spot with the same scale object (a stuffed animal, a chalkboard, a onesie sticker) so you can see them grow against it. Twelve of those turn into a printable first birthday board in about five minutes. You don’t need perfect shots — any nice photo from the month works.

The only rule that matters: pick something for scale

The magic of a monthly series is that you can see the growth. That only reads if there’s something constant in the frame to grow against.

Pick one prop and stick with it: the same teddy bear, a monthly milestone card, a knit blanket, the same chair. Month 1 the baby is smaller than the bear. Month 12 the baby is hauling the bear around by its ear. That’s the whole story, told in one object.

Same spot helps too — near a window, same background. But if you move, don’t sweat it. The prop does most of the work.

What to shoot each month

Babies don’t hit milestones on a schedule, so treat this as a loose map, not a checklist. Some babies crawl at seven months, some skip crawling entirely. Shoot what your baby is actually doing that month — that’s the real keepsake.

MonthWhere they usually areAn easy shot to get
Month 1Newborn, sleeping most of the day, curled upBaby next to the prop, both lying down. They’ll be tiny beside it.
Month 2First real smiles, more awake, following facesCatch a smile from above while they’re on their back.
Month 3Pushing up during tummy time, grabbing at thingsOn the tummy, head up, prop beside them.
Month 4Rolling over, laughing, grabbing everythingMid-laugh, or reaching for the prop.
Month 5Everything goes in the mouth, propped sittingPropped up on a cushion, prop tucked in beside them.
Month 6Sitting up (maybe wobbly), first tastes of foodSitting next to the prop — now they’re about the same height.
Month 7Sitting solid, maybe rocking on hands and kneesSitting, holding or hugging the prop.
Month 8Scooting, first crawl attempts, more teethMid-scoot, or a big open-mouth grin with new teeth.
Month 9Crawling, pulling up on furnitureCrawling toward the camera, prop in the background.
Month 10Cruising along the couch, standing while holding onStanding at the couch, one hand on the cushion.
Month 11Confident cruiser, maybe a few seconds standing soloStanding next to the prop — now they tower over it.
Month 12Standing, maybe first steps, cake and chaosThe birthday shot, or standing tall beside the prop from month 1.

Light: near a window, that’s it

You don’t need a ring light or a photographer. Soft daylight from a window, baby facing the light, is the whole trick. Shoot in the morning or late afternoon when it’s gentle, not harsh noon sun.

Turn off the overhead bulbs — they fight the window and turn everything yellow. Phone camera, natural light, done.

If you missed a month (you probably will)

Nobody gets all twelve on the exact day. That’s normal, and it does not ruin the board.

Missed month 5 entirely? Scroll your camera roll — there’s a photo from that month in there somewhere. It doesn’t have to be the posed prop shot. A snapshot of the baby asleep on someone’s chest counts. The board is a keepsake, not an audit. Nobody counts.

Started late, at month 4? Start now, and pull the earlier months from photos you already took. Every parent already has a thousand baby photos on their phone — you’re just picking twelve of them.

How to pick the best one from each month

When you’ve got thirty photos from a month and need one, don’t agonize. Two quick filters:

Is the baby’s face clear and lit? That beats a technically better photo where they’re looking away.
Does it feel like them that month? The gummy grin, the serious stare, the double chin. Pick the one that makes you smile, not the one that’s most “correct.”

The board crops every photo to match anyway, so you don’t need them all framed the same. You just need twelve you like.

Questions parents actually ask

Same date each month, or every four weeks?

Either — just pick one and stay consistent. Most parents shoot on the same calendar date the baby was born (born on the 9th → photo on the 9th). The board only needs twelve photos, one per month; it doesn’t care which day.

Do I need a special prop or those monthly stickers?

No. A stuffed animal you already own works perfectly — it’s the scale reference that matters, not the product. Stickers and milestone cards are cute, but a teddy bear from the crib does the exact same job for free.

My baby won’t sit still / hates the camera. Now what?

Burst mode. Hold the shutter down and fire off twenty frames while they move; one of them will be great. Have someone dangle a toy or make noise just above the lens to get eyes up.

What if the months don’t match my baby’s milestones?

Then shoot what’s real. The table above is a typical arc, not a target. A board of your actual baby — late crawler, early walker, whatever — is the honest one, and the only one worth framing.

When you’ve got all twelve

Once the year is in your camera roll, the first birthday board pours the twelve monthly photos plus one big center portrait into a printable keepsake — free, no sign-up, about five minutes, and the photos never leave your browser.
